If you look closer at my notes, you will see that they are made using three languages! I am learning Spanish in Ukrainian, and often use English words for a faster notetaking process.
I find the way our brain works when it comes to languages fascinating! One minute I speak and think in English, next I am doing exactly the same but in Ukrainian. Finally, I am getting closer to being able to do this in Spanish.
It is important to me to be understood, to deliver my message the way it is intended to be delivered, and interpreters are not always capable of doing that. Not because they don’t want to, but because they are humans with their own beliefs, opinions, and delivery techniques. Sometimes I say three sentences and the person who is helping me translate says three words! 🤦🏻♀️ I know this is NOT the message I am trying to get across, so what do I do? I learn how to speak that language, so next time I can do it on my own.
I also believe that people are more willing to open up to someone who is at a minimum trying to speak their language. Since helping people is my future goal, building this bridge is an important part of the process.
Do you speak another language? Do you want to learn another language? Or do you feel that knowing the language you were born into is enough to get you through life? 🤔
