What makes you excited? Is it big things, small things, or a combination of both?
I’ve noticed a pattern here, but I may be wrong in thinking that the price of happiness throughout our lifetime is like a rollercoaster. Small children are excited by small things – a parent smile, hug, and baby talk. As they grow up some, it is all about quantity and not quality of gifts that fill their hearts with joy. Teenagers ask for expensive gifts rather than “a small reminder of their special day.” Then, in young adulthood, they would rather have it small and cheap but for it to be their own, a first inexpensive car – but I bought it myself, first small apartment – but it is my own with my own rules. Around the late twenties, adults feel ambitious and believe that have to be in a good place in life by this age, so they are focused on making money, owning a lovely house in a nice neighborhood, driving a car that is worth as much as someone’s home, luxurious vacations, name brand clothes… you get the picture.
Reaching forty, I personally realized the value of small gestures, real friends, and genuine laughs. I was never materialistic, never followed brand names, or tried making people believe that I have it all, but now all this matters even less. I am happy when my family is happy, or when I hear from a dear friend whom I have not talked to for a while, but we can always start where we left off. I am happy when the day at work goes as planned, not SMOOTH, but at least AS PLANNED (my plans always include curves on the road!). My heart fills with joy when my girls spend time together, laughing and sharing secrets. I am happy seeing my sister singing as if no one is listening or spending time with my daughter as if they are best friends. I am at peace when I see my mom working on her art and I see the pride in her eyes because she loves the result. I also feel warm inside when people recognize my efforts, are thankful for making them feel the way I do, or when I am achieving something difficult.
I wonder what will make me feel happy twenty years from now? My mom says it’s “when everyone is home”, so she does not have to worry about us! Lol
What makes you happy? Has it been the same thing all your life, or has it changed throughout the years?
